Lumineers are a particular brand of porcelain veneers that are made by the Den Mat corporation. They’re made out of Cerinate porcelain, which is very strong, and so they are a little bit thinner than the average porcelain veneer. Lumineers and other ultra-thin brands are only 0.3 millimeter thick. Most porcelain veneers are 0.5 millimeter thick. Be careful where you go to have your porcelain veneers. Some dentists promote Lumineers aggressively. They are a high profit item for dentists because they require little work, and it is relatively easy to become certified to place them. The problem comes if the dentist isn’t fully prepared to do all types of cosmetic dentistry. In his or her excitement, the dentist may not give you an accurate evaluation as to whether this is the best treatment for you. Since they are so thin, they are promoted as being able to be placed without any tooth preparation beforehand. It may be that a no-preparation technique will work for your case. But it will make your teeth more bulky and about two millimeters longer. You need to know that before you begin treatment.
Lumineers, however, aren’t the only brand of ultra-thin porcelain veneers. Another brand is DURAThin, which has all the same advantages.
